Medications for diabetes treatment.
Diabetes pills and insulin preparations are typically the two kinds of medicines used to lower blood glucose level.
Oral medications for diabetes act in three distinctive ways.
They promote the secretion of insulin by stimulating the pancreas.
They
enhance the cells’ ability to utilize insulin.
They delay the production of glucose from double and especially complex carbohydrates, like starches.
Pills for diabetes treatment have been classified in six main categories and they include sulfonylureas, nateglinides, meglitinides, alpha-glucose inhibitors, biguanides and thiazolidinediones.
Apart from the pills for diabetics, inhaled insulin and an insulin analog version are presented in the following table.
Skin substitutes are products that help in healing of foot ulcers in patients with diabetes. The Becaplermin / Regranex, which is used in diabetic foot ulcers treatment, is included in this page, as well.
About generic drugs and how to find diabetes medications online.
We strongly recommend generic forms of a medicine, whenever they are available, rather than brand-names. A generic drug is a preparation which is the same as a brand-name drug in terms of dosage, safety, strength, the way it is taken, quality, performance and intended use. Generic drugs are therapeutically equivalent to their brand-name counterparts. In other words, they contain the same chemical ingredients and have the same medical effect. The differences between a generic and brand-name drug are the name and the price. A generic drug can be up to 80% less expensive in comparison to an equivalent brand-named counterpart.
Today almost half of all prescriptions are filled with generic drugs. For more information about generic drugs you can read the Frequently Asked Questions about generic drugs.
In the table below you will read the generic names first and the brand names second, included in the brackets.

|
Nateglinide, which is a D-phenylalanine derived drug, works in a similar way to sulfonylureas and it is taken before each of three main meals. |
|
Biguanide increases the body’s ability to utilize insulin. It is usually taken twice a day during a meal, unless different instructions are given. |
Metformin
( Glucophage )
Metformin SR
( Glucophage XR ) |

Thiazolidinedione (Glitazone) increases the effectiveness of insulin by lowering the resistance to the hormone, especially in cells of the muscular and fat tissue. It must be taken once or twice daily with food. Strong contra-indications for thiazolidinedione are pregnancy and kidney, liver or heart conditions. |
Rosiglitazone Maleate
( Avandia ) |

| Alpha-glucose inhibitor interferes and delays the metabolism of double and complex carbohydrate. This action prevents a sudden rise of blood sugar to abnormal levels after a person’s meal. In fact, this is the reason that the drug is prescribed to be taken before each main meal. |
Acarbose
( Precose, Recarb ) |

Inhaled insulin is the most recent version of the drug and is suitable for both types of diabetes. |
