Diabetes signs and symptoms.
There are certain signs and symptoms that must be taken in consideration, because they may be an indication of diabetes. In a lot of cases, the disease
may be present without any apparent signs and complications may remain unnoticed until the first
symptoms occur. Therefore, individuals with predisposition to the disease must have tests
for diabetes on a regular basis.
The most characteristic signs and symptoms include:
Rapid unintentional weight loss.
Muscle wasting.
Increased thirst and/or mouth
dryness.
Increased hunger.
Unexplainable chronic
gingivitis (gum infection).
Unexplainable fatigue.
Increased urination,
especially at night (polyuria).
Drowsiness.
Nausea and vomiting.
Blurred vision not related to
age.
Sores or wounds that do not
heal properly.
Frequent or recurrent skin
infections or persisting eczema.
Frequent occurrence of yeast
infections, like thrush.
Tingling or numbness in the
limbs and/or fingers.
Itching of genitals not
related to any apparent reason.
If any of the above characteristic signs or symptoms is present for a long period of time
and especially, if it coexists with any of the risk
factors, it must be taken in consideration and be checked. A physician may advise a
fasting blood glucose test or an oral glucose tolerance test. If blood glucose levels are higher than normal but
less than diabetes figures, the condition is characterized as prediabetes. In such a case, blood
glucose level must be monitored and checked every one or two years.
