Lactose intolerance.

Lactose intolerance is a condition in which dairy products, especially milk, cannot be digested due to deficiency in lactase. The latest is an enzyme produced in the small part of the intestine and it is necessary for metabolism of lactose which is a type of disaccharide contained in the above foods. Lactose intolerance is described as lactase deficiency or dairy product or milk intolerance.
The cause of lactose intolerance is not known. Statistics show that lactose intolerance is less common in northern and western Europeans than in people, being of Native American, Asian, African, and Mediterranean origin.
Lactose intolerance can occur at different ages, depending on hereditary factors. For instance, in Caucasians the onset of symptoms takes place in children, being older than the age of five, whereas in African-Americans, lactose intolerance often occurs at two years of age.
The condition is more common in premature babies. Lactose intolerance develops in a significant number of adults by the age of twenty.
Temporary lactase deficiency can occur because of viral or bacterial enteritis, especially in children, since the intestine mucosal cells get damaged. Undiagnosed lactose intolerance may be present in patients with symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance.

In a lactose intolerance situation, the aftermath of consuming lactose-containing foods is excessive bloating, abdominal cramps, flatulence and diarrhea. Symptoms appear after ingestion of milk products and they are relieved by abstaining from eating dairy products.

Treatment of lactose intolerance.

Elimination of diary products from the diet can lead to deficiency in vitamin D, calcium, vitamin B2 and protein. Thus, substitutes of milk are necessary. For instance, soy milk preparations are recommended for babies, being younger than two years of age. Soy or rice milk are good alternative dietary options for toddlers. Goat milk can be used, as well, since it contains low amounts of lactose. This milk is a very good choice, providing it has been fortified with the necessary vitamins and essential amino acids.
If uptake of milk products has been discontinued, other calcium sources must be included in the diet. Food supplementation must be taken, in order nutrient deficiencies to be avoided. The following links will guide you how to find calcium, riboflavin and vitamin D supplements online.
Lactase if taken as a food supplement can be a very good solution for people being deficient in the enzyme. Use the Find lactase enzymes supplements online. button to find such lactase supplements online.
