Vitiligo.

Vitiligo is also called leukoderma. The term describes this condition very accurately, since it is derived from the Greek language and it means white skin. Vitiligo is characterized by the absence of active melanocytes. These are cells, producing melanin, the pigmentation that provides color to the skin, eyes and hair. Non inflamed, white patches, which are typically present on the face or limbs, create the clinical image of this dermatological disorder which is not contagious. Gradually, these pale patches may disappear and migrate to other areas of the skin.
Although vitiligo can occur at any age, it mainly affects young people. In general, two percent of the total population suffers from the disorder.
The exact causes of vitiligo have not been well identified yet. Studies have given evidence that the condition may be an aftermath of a combination of hereditary, psychological or environmental factors and autoimmune reaction.
Vitiligo itself is not a health-threatening disorder. However, it can lead to serious complications. If the patches are apparent, they can result in loss of confidence, on behalf of the person. Gradually, this situation may lead to anxiety, depression.
Melanin is a defensive factor against the harmful effects of sunlight. The absence of this substance makes the skin very vulnerable. Thus, the exposed skin areas affected by vitiligo must be protected by sunscreens with a SPF having a protection value at least 30. Otherwise, the risk for sunburns and skin cancer increases dramatically.

Treatment of vitiligo.

Make-up preparations and concealers may be able to minimize the color difference in cases that vitiligo is not very apparent and extended. In fact, in very fair people the pale patches are hardly noticeable and the only thing that should be avoided is tanning, which can make the unaffected skin darker and reveal the problem. Try the following Find Dermablend Compact Cover Creme online. button and you will find reliable concealers with a wide range of shades. You may need to buy more than one containers with different shades and by mixing them to reach your own natural color. Please note that these concealers are not suitable to people, suffering from acne, since concealers contain oily or waxy ingredients. The latest can clog pilosebaceous units and make acne worse.
Phototherapy is often used to treat leukoderma, because in many cases PUVA or exposure to narrowband UVB light can trigger the reactivation or regeneration of melanocytes which, in turn, will start producing melanin.
Topical immunomodulators, like Elidel and Protopic can help to the same therapeutic direction. These agents are typically used to treat psoriasis but they are often beneficial in eczema and vitiligo. The great advantage of these preparations is that they can be used on the face, without producing any side-effects. Try the following links and you will be guided how to find Elidel or Protopic online.
Topical corticosteroids seem to be quite effective and contribute to the restoration of pigmentation, when they are applied on the pale areas, providing the patches are not very extensive and they are not located on the face. Potent preparations should not be used on the face because of the side-effects they present. Use the link below for more information and guidance on how to find topical corticosteroids online.
