Banaba.
Banaba's botanical name is Lagerstroemia Speciosa. There has been a lot of research on banaba leaves and their ability to maintain normal blood glucose. Banaba has an insulin-like action and it causes no side-effects, according to Japanese researchers.
As a glucose transport activator banaba helps the body to metabolize carbohydrates. This is the reason why it can be used as an ingredient in many weight-loss products and in obesity treatment.
In Japan, banaba tea has become quite popular and is known as "slimming tea". In the US, banaba tea is used as a safe, natural food supplement.
Numerous studies have been done on this remarkable herb, many of them in Japan, with researchers such as Dr. Yamazaki, professor of Pharmaceutical Science, Hiroshima University School of Medicine.
A study published by Edison Biotechnology Institute, Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio compared a whole leaf extract of banaba with insulin effects on cells. The conclusion was that the whole herb and not only the corosolic acid, which is the main active ingredient in banaba leaves, had a blood glucose level lowering result and could be used to support normal function of insulin in diabetes in combination, if necessary, with other diabetes medications.
Banaba is widely used in diabetes herbal remedies complexes, as well.
