Butcher’s broom.
This is also referred to as ruscus aculeatus, sweet broom, box holly, knee holly, kneeholm, pettigree or Jew's myrtle.
Extracts derived from butcher’s broom are commonly used in medicine and beauty products, since their ingredients have important pharmaceutical properties. By promoting the production of collagen the herb enhances the flexibility and increases the strength of the walls of blood vessels, especially veins. Butcher’s broom, apart from being a vasoconstrictor, minimizes the permeability of the vessel walls, not allowing water to come through easily. These effects can result in prevention or cure of swelling, blood clotting due to venous insufficiency in legs, stretched vessels and orthostatic low blood pressure.
Butcher’s broom is contained in preparations that are sold over-the-counter and used for treatment of hemorrhages. It is also included in eye care creams, because by preventing swelling
and constricting blood vessels
it can minimize or eliminate puffiness and dark circles. Other uses of products containing butcher’s broom extract may be for treatment of postural hypertension and prevention of post-operational bleeding.
