The plant is classified in subtropical garcinia species and it is indigenous mainly to Indonesia, India but it can be found in many parts of Asia. The fruit of gambooge resembles tiny pumpkin with a yellowish color.
Garcinia cambogia is cultivated for its fruits in central and West Africa and Southeast Asia. The plant thrives in tropical rain forests, as well.
In India, gambooge is used as an herbal remedy for a wide variety of health problems, including delayed or painful menstruation, rheumatism, swelling, bowel parasites and constipation. Powder or pieces of the rind of the plant are often used as food condiment in Asia and especially in India.
Studies have shown found that hydroxycitric acid is the main active substance found in the fruit of garcinia cambogia. Hydroxycitric acid is a lipogenesis inhibitor. In other words, it can interfere and decreases the synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids in the human body. Because of this action, gambooge extract is extensively used and included in weight loss preparations.
