Glycyrrhiza glabra.
Glycyrrhiza glabra or liquorice is indexed in the fabaceae family from which a sweet flavoring can be extracted. The term glycyrrhiza is produced from the Greek language and it means sweet root. Although the plant can be found in wild quite easily, small commercial quantities of liquorice are cultivated in North America.
Extract can be obtained from liquorice after the roots of the plant are boiled and give syrup. The viscosity of the latest depends on the amount of water been evaporated. If all of the water evaporates the final product is very thick and sticky. Both syrup and solid form are available in the market.
The active ingredient of glycyrrhiza glabra is the sweetener glycyrrhizin. The latest is nearly fifty times sweeter than crystal sugar. The Chinese of liquorice that is used widely in traditional medicine contains glycyrrhizin in much higher concentration.
A powder made with liquorice root is considered an effective remedy against cough. Glycyrrhiza glabra has been well known as expectorant for thousands of years and it is still used in modern medicine for the same purpose. Liquorice is used in toothpastes, as well.
