Alprostadil is a prostaglandin and it is a reliable option for impotence treatment. Precautions and side-effects related to alprostadil (Caverject, Muse).
The most common adverse-effect of the injectable versions is the scaring of the penile tissue that may occur due to repeated injections. In order this risk to be minimized, the injection should not be performed more often than once a week, unless a physician's advice is different. It has to be mentioned that scaring may worsen erectile dysfunction. Potential infection, bruising or bleeding may occur as an aftermath of a bad technique. Priapism may develop in rare cases. Other side-effects include irregular heart beat, faintness, low blood pressure, dizziness and flushing, regardless of the pharmaceutical form taken. Alprostadil should not be used in men who do not suffer from erectile dysfunction. The use of the drug must be avoided, if a medical history includes priapism, excessive bleeding, leukemia or multiple myeloma.
