Alprostadil (Caverject, Muse and Prostin VR).
Alprostadil is a prostaglandin and it is a reliable option for impotence treatment. Prostaglandins are organic chemical substances naturally synthesized within the body and are involved in numerous bodily functions, including the promotion of uterine contractions. Alprostadil is applied either as self-injection or as a tiny intra urethral suppository and it can produce erection in a similar way to selective enzyme inhibitors. The latest are the well known drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
Alprostadil is a vasodilator agent and by relaxing the relevant smooth muscle, allows increased amounts of blood to flow into the penis. Thus, it causes and sustains an erection firm enough for penetration. The significant advantage is that alprostadil acts locally and perhaps it is more suitable for individuals who cannot use selective enzyme inhibitors because of their medical history or other medications they take.
Caverject is the injectable form of alprostadil. The injection is relatively painless and it is performed with a short, thin needle and the drug is released straight into the corpora cavernosa. Alternatively, the person can insert a suppository into the urethra using an easy-handling delivering device.
The latest form of alprostadil comes under the brand-name Muse.
Within five or ten minutes, the first signs of erection appear and the person can have a sexual intercourse in approximately half an hour after the injection. The erection may last from thirty minutes to five or six hours, depending on the amount of the drug taken. Before the beginning of treatment, a healthcare provider must guide the patient how to prepare the injectable solution, how the injection to be done and to determine an adequate dose for a reasonably lasting erection. Of course, similar guidance may be needed for the use of the suppositories.
Studies have shown that the injectable form is effective in nearly 90% of male users of all ages, whereas the efficacy of the suppository does not exceed the 65% of the cases. In certain cases, Viagra and Muse may be used in combination after a doctor's advice.
Caverject and Muse are the brand-names for alprostadil preparations. Caverject is injectable and it is available in vials or pre-filled syringes of 20mcg. Muse is available in 250, 500 and 1,000mcg suppositories. Click the above links to find the medication you need online, providing you have a valid prescription for that.
Prostin VR is another injectable form of alprostadil and it comes in vials with concentration of 500mcg/ml. Although alprostadil is available in gel or patches, there is no documentation for their efficacy yet.
Precautions and side-effects related to alprostadil (Caverject, Muse).
The most common adverse-effect of the injectable versions is the scaring of the penile tissue that may occur due to repeated injections. In order this risk to be minimized, the injection should not be performed more often than once a week, unless a physician's advice is different. It has to be mentioned that scaring may worsen erectile dysfunction. Potential infection, bruising or bleeding may occur as an aftermath of a bad technique. Priapism may develop in rare cases. Other side-effects include irregular heart beat, faintness, low blood pressure, dizziness and flushing, regardless of the pharmaceutical form taken. Alprostadil should not be used in men who do not suffer from erectile dysfunction. The use of the drug must be avoided, if a medical history includes priapism, excessive bleeding, leukemia or multiple myeloma.
